A good headshot does one job: it helps people trust you before they meet you. Here is how to prepare so your session goes quickly and you leave with a photo you actually like. When you are ready, see our professional headshots service.
1. Know where the photo will be used
LinkedIn, a company team page, a law firm bio, a speaker program and a real estate listing all crop photos differently. Tell us the main uses ahead of time. A vertical head-and-shoulders frame covers most profiles, and a wider frame with space around you works for website headers and press.
2. What to wear
- Solid colors in mid or dark tones photograph best. Navy, charcoal, deep green and burgundy work for most skin tones.
- Avoid small checks, thin stripes and large logos, which distract or flicker on screens.
- Bring two or three options: one formal (suit or blazer), one business casual and one relaxed top for social media.
- Fit matters more than brand. Iron or steam clothes the night before, because wrinkles show at the shoulders and collar.
Miami is hot and humid. Carry your jacket and change at the studio so you do not arrive damp.
3. Hair, skin and grooming
Get a haircut about a week before, not the day before. If you wear makeup, keep it close to your everyday look and bring powder for shine. For beards, trim the day before. Bring glasses if you usually wear them; we angle the light to avoid glare.
4. Studio or outdoor?
The studio at 1145 NW 28th St gives clean, consistent light, which is what most companies and firms want. Outdoor headshots in shaded places such as Coral Gables, Coconut Grove or Brickell look more natural and relaxed. In Miami, plan outdoor sessions for early morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh midday sun.
5. During the session
You do not need to know how to pose. We give short, specific cues: chin slightly forward, shoulders relaxed, a small turn of the body. Most people loosen up after the first few minutes, and the best frames usually come in the second half of the session.
6. For teams and law firms
If several people need matching photos, we keep the same background, framing and lighting for everyone, and record the setup so future hires match. See corporate photography for team sessions.

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear for a professional headshot?
Solid mid or dark colors, a well-fitted jacket or blazer, and one more relaxed option. Avoid small patterns and large logos.
Is a studio or outdoor headshot better for LinkedIn?
Both work. The studio gives a clean, consistent look that most companies prefer. Outdoor headshots in shade look more relaxed and natural.
